Building a repository

Anecdote: I was talking about building repositories with my wife yesterday. It's March in 2007 (for history's sake). We were in the bathroom, and I was talking about short stories being a repository for novels. She said, 'Isn't that something you stick up your ass?' No, dear. That's a suppository.

Anecdotes are a great source of ideas. When you come across them. It's all about collecting material. Whether the stories are any good or not is up to you. All mine are in first draft and I believe can be dramatically improved.

I started to write short stories between writing my novels. I'm not particularly good at the short story, but I have hundreds of ideas for novels in my repository. If I'm ever stuck for an idea (and, after writing for over a decade it's never happened), at least I have these short stories. I have had about 50 accepted so far and others now appear in my articles page.

Why write short stories?

  • They are an excellent way to capture an idea without writing a novel.
  • They serve as a repository of ideas for when you want to write a novel.
  • They are also good for 'gap fillers' between the novels you write.
  • The short story gives you an alternate route to display your willingness to make progress.
  • They are catchy, brief and my stories always have a twist in any genre.
  • Although I prefer the novel, short stories are the purest form of storytelling.
  • They are explosive by nature.
